It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a remarkable individual, Coach Johnny Houston Haynes, who touched the lives of many as an esteemed educator, coach, and dedicated member of the DeSoto Parish community. Affectionately known as "Coach," his legacy is etched in the hearts and minds of those he mentored and inspired over the years.
Coach Haynes embarked on his educational journey, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Northwestern State University in 1953, with a Major in Health and P.E. and a Minor in Math. Later, he furthered his academic pursuits, graduating with a Master of Education Degree from Stephen F. Austin in 1964. His commitment to learning extended beyond, accumulating Plus-30 graduate hours at NSU in 1973.
For three decades, Coach Haynes served the DeSoto Parish School System with unwavering dedication. From 1954 to 1984, he wore various hats at Logansport High School, leaving an indelible mark. As the Head Football and Track Coach, he not only imparted athletic skills but also shared his knowledge in Algebra I and II and Geometry. His leadership expanded as he took on roles such as Athletic Director and Principal for different grade levels.
Coach Haynes's influence extended beyond the confines of Logansport. In a ten-year tenure at Beckville High School in Texas, he continued to shape young minds as a Math Teacher. Returning to DeSoto Parish, he assumed roles at North DeSoto High School as an Assistant Principal and part-time math teacher, leaving an undefeated football team record in 1996-97 at North DeSoto Jr. High School.
In the twilight of his educational career, Coach Haynes dedicated 15 years to the DeSoto Parish School Board (1999-2014). His leadership was evident in various roles, including serving as President and Vice-President. His commitment extended to the Finance Committee, where he played a pivotal role as Finance Committee Chairman and in shaping the financial landscape of the school system.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Coach Haynes was a beacon of integrity, discipline, and compassion. His impact resonates in the accomplishments of those he guided and the enduring positive changes he brought to the educational landscape.
